Ibis, Premier Inn and Travelodge are the main no frills budget chains. All offer standard clean rooms little different from any three or even four star hotels. All you lack are the frills like room service, comlimentary toiletries, fitness centres, concierge services and spacious lounges in the lobby. You will normally have a restaurant of some kind with good honest food.
Travelodge tend to be most frugal of the chains and normally have the cheapest room rates. Despite the simple business model, just like the low cost airlines room rates are extremely volatile.

Travelodge Saver Room Rates
Saver room rates at Travelodge are one of the accommodation bargains in Central London. Rates are discounted 50-60% or more and start from £19 up to £59.
The further you book ahead the better your chance of getting a saver rate.
Every once in a while Travelodge make available a tranche of 'saver rate' rooms and they soon go.
Express By Holiday Inn are the only no frills budget chain that bundle breakfast into the room rate.
All the no frills chains offer family rooms, often exactly the same price as a standard double/twin room. The only catch is that these family rooms are aimed at two parents with small kids, sofa beds are commonly used for the third and fourth person. So no good for a group of adults.
