Lets be clear, these are not homely houses with a couple of rooms rented out by attentive family owners. These are small simple hotels, with none of the frills. Price is the key overwhelming attraction. The very cheapest rooms are not ensuite, you share the bathroom. The hotels are typically 4 or 5 floors and few will have lifts.

The Montana Excel is typical of the B&B's overlooking a quiet garden square. The Montana Excel is towards the cheaper end of the scale and has a sister hotel the California Hotel in the district.

The Montana Excel offers rooms from singles right through to quads. Montana Excel offers a large breakfast buffet, including freshly cooked full English, cereals and fruit. There is also a takeaway option for those in a hurry.

Reception is open 24 hours. Early morning calls, ironing facilities, hair dryers and daily newspapers are all available from reception.

Montana Excel Bed and Breakfast Hotel Kings Cross - Typical Reviews

"Location was perfect. Staff was nice and friendly. Plenty of tea and coffeebags in the room. Breakfast was ok. They also have adapters for appliances in the reception. My room was in the basement, and therefore a bit cold. The small window (that you could not see through) was drafty, and located above the bed. So the bed was a cold place to be, but the radiator heated the rest of the room except floors and the shower. Hot water all times. The cleaning was another thing, table surfaces and shower was clean, but carpet was a bit dirty and there were big spiderwebs on the corners of the room. For a short stay it was ok, but i wouldn't stay there for a week. "

"The Montana Excel is located very close to Kings Cross/St Pancras station(s). Basically cross the road outside Kings Cross and walk about 200 yards up Argyle Street - couldn't have been easier. The hotel faces onto a lovely green space (Argyle Square). My room was at the top of the hotel and was a pretty small double, but it perfectly suited my needs of somewhere central, clean and quiet to sleep prior to a conference the next day. The en-suite was also small (loo, sink and shower) but everything worked and was clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is free wi-fi - ask at reception for the access code. The decor/fittings/etc were not the newest or best, but everything was very reasonable for the price of the accommodation. I'm not saying that it was cheap or in poor condition, just that you must have a sensible expectation of what you're going to get for your money. It's certainly not Fawlty Towers! (but neither is it the Ritz.). I paid £60 for a double en-suite for 1 person for a Thursday night stay. The price included breakfast (which I didn't have so can't comment on, other than that it smelled lovely as I checked out) - which, for London is a great price. This is not a top-class or luxury hotel but it isn't representing itself as such. I would certainly stay here again either for a similar business trip or if looking for an inexpensive base for a weekend in London. My main concern beforehand was the reputation of Kings Cross for being seedy. Clearly however a lot of work has been done in the area and I had no reason to feel uneasy the whole time I was there, including a walk around in the evening. "

"My daughter and I stayed for five nights at the Kensington. We found the accommodations to be quite adequate and clean. The staff were very helpful and willing to assist us with unusual requests, like having luggage delivered by the airlines in the middle of the night. The breakfast was average. Our room was up 4 1/2 flights of stairs, which was fine for us, but some guests might find it daunting. We shared a bathroom, which worked out well - we rarely had to wait for it. The location of the hotel is excellent - close to tube stations, shopping, good but inexpensive restaurants, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. We recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't require luxury, but values a friendly staff."

"Good value for money. We stayed in a family room, the bathroom was very spacious. We stayed for a long weekend and found it perfectly adequate. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice. Beds were uncomfortable though, unfortunately, but we weren't staying long enough for that to be an issue. Good location too, very short walk from Kings Cross Station. Generally good enough. Some people have unrealistic expectations - what you pay for is usually what you get, if you're expecting The Ritz then don't !"

"We booked this hotel because of its proximity to Kings Cross and it worked out perfect. We arrived at 9.30 AM and went straight to the hotel to drop off our bags before heading off. They seemed apologetic because our room wasn't ready - we didn't expect it to be! The staff were lovely and friendly, the family room was very clean and perfect for 2 adults and 2 kids aged 14 and 8. Beds very comfortable. They provided plenty of tea and coffee and loads of milk. The only thing that would have been useful was sachets of shampoo and shower gel. Would definitely return here. "

"Excellent location because of its close proximity to St Pancras/ Kings Cross, tube National and International Rail stations. Small room - clean linen, comfortable bed, and we were grateful to be on the ground floor because of our large, unwieldy bags. Unfortunately the shower was not clean but dirty and mouldy - even though the water pressure was perfectly adequate. Breakfasts were the best part and we ate heartily before our days activities. An excellent English Breakfast - just what I was hoping for, with eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, baked beans, toast, butter, jams and coffee/tea."
