Hotels near Leicester Square and Covent Garden are in the heart of the West End theatre district of London.
The Leicester Square and Covent Garden area is the closest you come to something equivalent to the American 'downtown area' in London, though many major sights and the main shopping is a little way outside the district.

Its a great area to stay if a major reason to visit London is theatre and nightlife. Geographically it is in the centre of London, Trafalgar Square which is the formal centre of London being within this district. Many of the major sights are within walking distance and shopping not much further.
The West End area around Leicester Square and Covent Garden is dominated by luxury 4 and 5 star hotels. Most of the global chains are represented. Budget hotels are very few and far between.
The only major budget chain hotels in the district, very much the exception to the rule is the Travelodge Covent Garden and Premier Inn Leicester Square. The room rates for this Travelodge and Premier Inn are not cheap, often broadly comparable with good 4 star hotels a little further out. There are a few independent and boutique hotels too,
If you are looking for really cheap budget accommodation, this is not the place to come. Best to look a little further out, first stop probably being the Kings Cross Bed and Breakfast hotels. There are some cheaper mid range hotels at Victoria and Euston. Bloomsbury, on the fringes of the district is a very nice place to stay with cheaper hotel rates.

Leicester Square & Covent Garden Hotels - The Right Solution For You?
If you ask your travel agent for a hotel within walking distance of the major sights and theatres there is a good chance a hotel in the Leicester Square or Covent Garden area is where you'll be offered. Room rates in the district are among the highest in London. Although central, London is spread out and you will still need to get public transport for sightseeing and serious shopping. None of the direct airport transfer options come here either, bar taxi cabs and the London Underground to Heathrow Airport. A lot of people who come here on their first visit to London, gravitate a little further out on subsequent visits.
