| Salisbury Cathedral |
Along the way the driver/guide will just have enough time to brief you about our first stop at Salisbury Cathedral.
For England, Salisbury is a new city, only started in the 13th Century when the Cathedral was built. About the same time as the Magna Carta was being signed, a copy of which is on view in the Chapter House of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral is one of the best Cathedrals in England and has the tallest spire of them all. One of the mind blowing aspects of the Cathedral is that its foundations are only 3-4 feet deep, so don't jump up and down!
The Cathedral is within a 'Close' protected by medieval walls and you can if you wish walk through the gates into the city centre, a regional shopping centre with many medieval buildings still in place.
We recommend a stop of about 75 minutes to view the Cathedral
Salisbury to Stonehenge via Old Sarum and The Woodford Valley
Leaving Salisbury we pay a short visit to Old Sarum (Sarum is the old English word for Salisbury) on the hill top above the current city of Salisbury. Originally an old Iron Age Hill Fort inhabited not that long after the Neolithic's at Stonehenge.
The Norman's built a classic castle/moat and a Cathedral within the old Iron Age battlements, before decamping down to Salisbury below to the current Salisbury.
We spend a short time here to look at Old Sarum and if the weather is good you will be given a short briefing about Stonehenge, (the next part of the journey you'll be too absorbed by the countryside to listen to the guide).
After Old Sarum, we descend into the Woodford Valley and follow the river past sleepy villages with limestone walls, thatched cottages, riverside pubs, Norman churches - a taster of the English countryside, very different to London. At the end of the valley is Stonehenge.
Stonehenge
Stonehenge certainly can be a mystical place. Most people take around 45 minutes to visit the monument, an audio guide is included in admission.
Our driver/guide though will help you get the most of your visit with further insights and guiding, maximising the Stonehenge experience.
Optional Windsor
At this stage you might opt to go straight to London arriving mid afternoon or make it a full day by including Windsor. Its around a 75 minute journey to Windsor, mostly along fast motorway/freeway to Windsor. We pass Royal Ascot race course and travel through Windsor Great Park arriving in time for perhaps a late lunch.

Most people take around 2 hours to go around Windsor Castle, so there is time for lunch or explore the rest of Windsor and Eton itself, which is very rewarding. Perhaps walk over the bridge across the River Thames to Eton on the other side, feed the Swans or take a short ride to the Queen's farm shop.
Windsor Castle is one of three official residences of The Queen and has been home to the Sovereign for over 900 years.
The Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest in continuous occupation. The imposing towers and battlements of the Castle loom large from every approach to the town, creating one of the world's most spectacular skylines.
Windsor to London and Heathrow hotels
Time permitting on leaving Windsor we'll take you through Runnymede where the Magna Carta was signed and you'll see the memorial. If you're hungry, you might want to pick up Fish & Chips from a real Fish & Chip shop to eat on the bus.
Heathrow is only 15 minutes away and the fist hotels in Central London are reached after about another 40 minutes.
