Southampton
Cruise Terminal To Salisbury
For the majority of cruises we will be on our way by about
08:30.
The driver/guide will provide a meet and greet service as you exit
customs and stow your luggage within the vehicle.
After introductions, the vehicle is soon on its way for the 30 minute
journey to Salisbury. The driver/guide will start to explain about
the Neolithic society that built Stonehenge. |
Soon,
we're at Salisbury - a medieval wool city with its icon, Salisbury
Cathedral, dominating the skyline on the approaches to the city.
For England, Salisbury is a new city only started in the 13th Century
when the Cathedral was built. Just at the same time as the Magna Carta
was being signed, a copy of which is on view in the Chapter House
of the Cathedral. |

Salisbury Cathedral |
One
of the mind blowing aspects of the Cathedral is that its foundations
are only 3-4 feet deep, so don't jump up and down!
The Cathedral is within a 'Close' protected by medieval walls and
you can if you wish walk through the gates into the city centre, a
regional shopping centre with many medieval buildings still in place. |
Salisbury
to Stonehenge via Old Sarum a
Its only
a 40 minute journey to Stonehenge from Salisbury, but a memorable
40 minutes it is. We travel via Old Sarum (Sarum is the old English
word for Salisbury) on the hill top. Originally an old Iron Age Hill
Fort inhabited not that long after the Neolithics at Stonehenge. The
Norman's built a classic castle/moat and a Cathedral within the old
Iron Age battlements, before decamping down to Salisbury below and
the Romans also were here too. We spend a short time here to look
at Old Sarum and if the weather is good you will be given a short
briefing about Stonehenge, (the next part of the journey you'll be
too absorbed by the countryside to listen to the guide)
We quickly descend into the Woodford Valley. We follow the river past
sleepy villages with limestone walls, thatched cottages, riverside
pubs, Norman churches - a taster of the English countryside, very
different to London.
All too soon, the driver has alerted you to an imminent arrival at
Stonehenge. |

At
Stonehenge the driver/guide will escort you into Stonehenge. An informative
audio tour comes with admission to Stonehenge.
The driver/guide will be available within Stonehenge to answer questions
you may have, take a group photo or demonstrate the ley lines that
converge at Stonehenge |
