Harwich Town is about 3 miles east of the International Port where the cruise and ferry terminal is. Harwich Town itself is surprisingly quiet, being at the end of a peninsular nobody is passing through. The town is very interesting with a heritage trail following many points of interest, mostly connected with its maritime past.

Much play is made of a former resident, Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower that brought the Pilgrims to North America. There is a small free museum as well about the Mayflower.

Next door to Harwich is Dovercourt. Here you will find shops and the towns main beach. Doverport is about a 20 minute walk along a pleasant seafront pedestrian/bicycle path.
There is a small beach in Harwich itself by the Lifeboat museum.
