Avebury
is in one of the sparsest populated areas in Southern England. As
far as the eye can see there is just rolling countryside populated
for the most part just by sheep.
Not promising for the independent traveller wanting to visit Avebury
using public transport. Luckily Avebury is serviced by several local
bus routes connecting the main towns in the area.
The nearest major town with good connections to London is Swindon.
There are fast frequent trains between Swindon and London's Paddington
station.

Two
bus routes operate to Avebury from Swindon taking around 30 minutes.
One bus is the Hants & Wilts route 95/96 that runs broadly hourly
Monday to Saturdays between Swindon and Pewsey via Avebury and Marlborough.
On Sundays there is just a handful of journeys.
During the summer months it is possible to combine Avebury and Stonehenge
in one long day. From Pewsey the 95/96 connects with the number 5/6
bus of Hants & Wilts that goes to Salisbury via Amesbury. You
can walk to Stonehenge from Amesbury in about 20/30 minutes.
There are frequent trains between Salisbury
and London's Waterloo station.
The other bus between Swindon and Avebury is the Stagecoach number
49 bus that also runs hourly Monday to Saturday, its eventual destination
being Trowbridge.
