Heathrow To Central London National Express Bus Service – Who Is It For?
It was only a few years back that there was a choice of reasonably priced dedicated airport buses frequently shuttling between Heathrow and and some of the major hotel districts. For reasons I never really understood few people used them and they are now part of history.
For most people arriving at Heathrow and travelling to London, the only decision is which train – vehicle based options being prone to traffic congestion, delay and needless stress, especially going out to catch a flight.
But there still is a bus service and it combines the low cost of the Underground with the comfort of the premium Heathrow Express train.
The National Express Bus Service between Heathrow and London Victoria gets very little publicity, but to me it seems ideal for a lot of people who are just not aware of its existence.
So who should be interested in the service?.
Key Factors Whether The Heathrow – London Victoria Bus Is For You
First of all its not good at all if you are using Terminals 4 or 5 at Heathrow. The buses do not visit the passenger terminals, but use Heathrow Central Bus Station between Terminals 1 and 3. The walk is shown on this walking to Heathrow Bus Station From Terminals 1 and 3 post.
The London terminus is Victoria Coach Station at the south west corner of the centre of London, close to Buckingham Palace – great if your accommodation is in Victoria, but if your hotel is at a northern hotel district like Paddington, Bayswater, Bloomsbury etc no good at all. You’ll spend more on the transfer to the hotel from Victoria than on the airport bus probably.
The buses are not dedicated airport buses. They are long distance buses from all over England where Heathrow is the last stop where they drop/pick-up passengers before they terminate in London. The good news is that they are really comfortable, air-conditioned with a guaranteed seat and washrooms. Those on the London Underground option to London from Heathrow can only dream.
The bad news is that schedules are not timed for the airport arrivals. There are 4 or 5 departures an hour after 8 a.m. but little before that and the last bus is at around 9:30 p.m. In the opposite direction its very similar with just 2 departures before 8 a.m.
Journey times are totally dependent on traffic conditions, the worst time in the London direction is weekdays between 7 a.m. and 10:30 p.m and Sundays between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. when the journey time will be over an hour. The fastest time of about 40 minutes isn’t much faster than the London Underground.
The coaches luggage hold is underneath the bus and is limited to 2 cases neither of which should be heavier than 20kg (44 1bs). The drivers do not weigh the luggage and have a reputation for being flexible, but incur excess luggage charges and your case will cost a lot more than your passengers fare! The parcel shelf inside the bus is big enough for a small briefcase or handbag, no more.
The Ideal Profile Of A Traveller Suited To The Heathrow-Victoria Bus
The ideal customer is someone where low cost is a major purchasing factor, but is reluctant to use the crowded London Underground.
The ideal customer is someone with accommodation in the Victoria area of London and using Terminal 1 or 3 at Heathrow Airport.
The ideal customer has no luggage weighing more than 20kg (44 lb) and a flight arriving or departing from Heathrow between 8:00 a.m and 6 p.m.
