African Paddle Boat Lucy Fisher At Runnymede, Windsor

A rather under publicised boat trip on the River Thames is the Lucy Fisher African Paddle Boat at Runnymede. Runnymede is especially attractive to people from the USA with a lot if US orientated items of interest notably the Magna Carta memorial.
Just by the National Trust Car Park and opposite the Tea Room is a small drive that leads about 50 yards down to the River Thames and a small boat house. A lot of people visiting Runnymede will miss it completely, there is just a small board by the roadside to indicate the facility exists. Despite its total lack of marketing the boat has been providing 45 minute river trips from Runnymede many years now at hourly intervals from April to September.
The boat is run by French Brothers who also run the much bigger pleasure boats running from the riverfront at Windsor catching the tourists visiting Windsor Castle. In Bob’s opinion this is a much nicer proposition. Originally built for the 1984 film “Tarzan – the legend of Greystoke”, the Lucy Fisher is a replica of an African Paddle steamer.
Built in 2 halves she was shipped to location in the Cameroons, and was artificially aged to reflect the true character of the era. Since then it has appeared in many films and TV programmes.
If you are interested search French Brothers Windsor for their web site and full operating times on the date you are thinking of visiting.

It would be a great day out to spend half a day visiting the Magna Carta Monument, a ride on the Lucy Fisher, perhaps a meal at the Queen’s Farm Shop Tea Room half way between Runnymede and Windsor Castle and of course a visit to Windsor Castle. After dinner why not try the theatre at Windsor or in the summer see if there is horse racing at Windsor race course before a late train back to London. The number 71 bus runs frequently between Windsor Castle and Runnymede (Bells Of Ouzely Pub) before going onto Heathrow Airport.
