An interesting fact about the theatre is that they buried Bruce Forsyth\u2019s ashes under its stage. To commemorate his connection to the Palladium, they placed a blue plaque with an inscription in the basement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formally a cinema situated on Tottenham Court Road, the Grade II listed, art deco styled building opened its doors in 1929. The Theatre Royal actually refers to several historic theatres in London. Most notable though is Theatre Royal \u2013 Drury Lane. London\u2019s oldest theatre opened its doors to the viewing public in 1663 soon after the closure of all theatres was lifted in 1660. King Charles II was a great theatregoer, and it has been a popular royal favourite ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyceum Theatre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A grand Grade II listed entrance with its large portico supported by six Corinthian columns welcomes you into the Lyceum Theatre. Located in London\u2019s Covent Garden and easily accessible by public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origins of the theatre trace back to 1765. The structure we see now was completed in 1834, although it has experienced various redesigns throughout its extensive history. Renamed His Majesty’s Theatre in April 2023 after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the theatre is known as one of the most iconic and historic venues in the West End. Playhouse Theatre – Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Playhouse Theatre is situated in Northumberland Avenue and opened in March 1882 with 1,200 seats. The theatre has been rebuilt and modified several times over its history reducing its original seating capacity. In 1951 the BBC ran its live performances of The Goon Show, Hancock\u2019s Half Hour and Steptoe and Son. Additionally live bands performed on its stage including Queen, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Returning to theatre usage again in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theatre had more renovations during the covid pandemic, re opening as the Kit Kat Club in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the West End<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the West End theatres, London is home to a variety of other theatres, including the National Theatre<\/a> (NT) and Shakespeare’s Globe<\/a>. These theatres function as repertory companies, with performances rotating every few days. This means that it is possible to see several shows in one week at the same venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Theatre, formally known as the Royal National Theatre stands on the South Bank of the River Thames and is one of London\u2019s recognisable landmarks. The National Theatre complex houses three auditoriums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivier Theatre: <\/strong>Named after the great Laurence Olivier, the largest of the three venues. The theatre is known for its large scale performances with seating for around 1,100. The circular stage with a fan-like seating arrangement is designed to resemble the theatre at Epidaurus in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyttelton Theatre:<\/strong> A more traditional theatre known for its productions of classic and contemporary plays. The Lyttelton has a seating capacity for around 890 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dorfman Theatre: <\/strong>The smallest of the three theatres seating around 400. The Dorfman stages more experimental, edgy and innovative productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National complex features a variety of cafes and bars, including The Understudy<\/a> a popular riverside bar serving street food and also brews its own lager, and the rooftop bar Forza Wine<\/a>. Additionally, the Lasdun restaurant<\/a> offers delicious modern British dishes. During the summer period normally July, the National Theatre stages its River Stage, a free outdoor event featuring an exciting lineup of performances including live music, theatre dance and club nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shakespeare\u2019s Globe<\/h2>\n\n\n

The modern Globe Theatre is an authentic replica of the original Globe Theatre built in 1599 by Shakespeare\u2019s playing company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. Located on the south bank of the River Thames in the Bankside Cultural Quarter, in close proximity to the Tate Modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Globe has a chequered history. In1613 the theatre caught fire during a performance of Henry VIII when a spark from a theatrical cannon ignited the thatched roof. After being rebuilt it was subsequently demolished under the Puritan regime of 1644, which opposed theatrical performances. The modern reconstructed theatre, championed by Sam Wanamaker was opened in 1997. An interesting fact is that the theatres thatched roof was the first in London since the Great Fire of 1666.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its open-air layout, the theatre allows the stage and the audience area to be fully exposed to the elements! Just as audiences did in Shakespeare\u2019s day theatre goers have the opportunity to stand as “groundlings” in the open yard. The stage also extends into this area, allowing for a closer connection with the performers. Groundling tickets are some of the most budget-friendly options for theatregoers in London. Three tiers of seating accommodate around 1,570 (including groundlings). The most expensive and best seating is in the galleries, which provide protection from the elements and have a better view of the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n

Adjacent to the Globe is the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse<\/a>, a recreation of a Jacobean indoor theatre. The playhouse is a part of the Shakespeare\u2019s Globe complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sam Wanamaker theatre showcases Shakespearean dramas, concerts, operas and Renaissance plays, offering a unique and historic experience that complements the Globe Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Playhouse is an intimate theatre with seating for just 340. This limited capacity not only creates an inviting atmosphere but also enhances the overall theatrical experience. A distinctive feature of the Playhouse is its candlelit stage, which casts a warm glow and provides a dramatic atmosphere that transports the audience back to when plays were performed in the Jacobean era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the seating arrangement, with the audience sitting around the stage, establishes a direct and intimate connection between the actors and the spectators. As a result, this compact space provides an immersive experience with excellent acoustics and striking dramatic effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off West End theatres<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Off West End or fringe is a term given to those smaller theatres in London including pubs theatres. Often hosting classic, innovative and diverse productions and are more likely to show plays rather than musicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off West End theatres also provide platforms for up and coming performers as well as established actors. Off West End theatres often have more shows during a year than West End shows which tend to have much longer runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An advantage of seeing an Off West End performance is tickets are often more affordable. The venues vary in size and are typically smaller than West End theatres, offering a closer and intimate connection to the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
