A Practical Guide To Staying In Accommodation At Horley Near Gatwick Airport

Horley Town Centre Near Gatwick Airport

Horley Town Centre Shopping Area

Horley is a small town just to the north of Gatwick Airport, the closest urban area to Gatwick's passenger terminals. There are many hotels and many of the small guest houses / bed and breakfast style accommodations are situated here, just 5 minutes drive from Gatwick Airport terminals.

The centre of Horley has a sizable shopping area and railway station with frequent trains to both Gatwick and Central London. Most of the accommodation is situated to the west of the town centre, along or off a road called Massetts Road.

All of the accommodations identified at Horley here provide transport to the passenger terminals, though not necessarily complementary and especially at the smaller guest houses with restricted hours of operation. There are a couple of local buses that go along Massetts Road to and from Gatwick several times an hour.

There is a very wide selection of restaurants, pubs and fast food available in the town centre. Without being a major shopping centre, Horley has all the types of shops you can need including chemists, banks, launderettes etc. There are three large supermarkets and several smaller neighbourhood stores too.

There is a small cluster of hotels about 1km north of Horley town centre, (Best Western Skylane and Cambridge Hotel). These are about 15 minutes walk from the town centre, but there are several neighbourhood shops and fast food outlets within 5 or 10 minutes walk too.

Horley Hotels & Guest Houses

The large chain hotels are furthest away from the town centre. The Travelodge Central, Holiday Inn and Airport Inn hotels are all clustered together. There is just a petrol station selling basics and a large 24x7 supermarket, Tesco within 5 minutes walk.

All the rest of the hotels are much smaller independent hotels, strung along Massetts Road that links the 3 large chain hotels with Horley town centre. The two local buses both go down Massetts Road to Horley from Gatwick Airport.

(with Chinese next door and Indian opposite)

Restaurants are dominated by Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants. If you want English/European food the widest choice is available at the many pubs.

By the large Waitrose supermarket in the centre of Horley is a Weatherspoons pub called the Jack Fairman. This is a very large spacious pub, Weatherspoon's having a reputation for lowest prices when it comes to food and drink. The Jack Fairman also offers free wi-fi and is open for breakfasts too, (though not early) again at very. very low prices.

Just north of the White House hotel down a side street (see map above) is a small parade of shops that contain several fast food outlets all next to each other including a Chinese, Thai/Vietnamese, Indian and burger options.

Horley Supermarkets

The largest supermarket by far is the Tesco Extra superstore just north of the Holiday Inn. This is open 24x7, except for Sundays when trading is restricted to six hours in the middle of the day. As well as the full range of food and toiletries there is also a cafe, pharmacy, opticians and cash machines.

In Horley town centre is a branch of Lidl selling a restricted range of groceries at the lowest prices. The Waitrose supermarket just before the railway station has a reputation for offering the highest quality food at a small price premium to the other chains.

In addition to these large supermarkets there are several small neighbourhood stores in Horley itself.

Local Buses & Trains At Horley

The local bus company is called Metrobus. There are two routes linking Horley and its hotels to Gatwick Airport. Both bus routes, numbers 20 and 100 go past the Airport Inn hotel and along Massetts Road to Horley town centre, (see map above). At Horley the number 20 turns right to the railway station and the 100 turns left eventually passing the cluster of hotels in North Horley, (Best Western Skylane and Cambridge Hotels).

The number 20 bus runs daily 2 or 3 times an hour from about 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. However it doesn't go to the North Terminal at Gatwick, just the South Terminal. There is a free shuttle train linking South and North terminals.

The number 100 bus runs at similar frequencies to the number 20 bus but starts up services an hour or so later. The number 100 visits both South and North terminals at Gatwick.

Trains from Horley station are very frequent, as many as three an hour for the 3 minute journey to Gatwick. The railway station at Gatwick is part of the South Terminal.

Going the other way there are trains at similar frequencies either to London Victoria or on the Thameslink line with stops at London Bridge and St Pancras in Central London.

North Horley Hotels

About 1km north of Horley town centre on the edge of Horley are two hotels, (Best Western Skylane and Cambridge Hotels). There is little in the immediate vicinity apart from suburban housing.

The number 100 bus, (see above) passes these hotels and passes through Horley town centre on its way to Gatwick, before going onto Crawley.

Closest to the hotels are two petrol/gas stations, both with shops.

About 10 minutes walk further south along the main Brighton Road is a small neighbourhood shopping centre. There is a small Tesco supermarket here, plus a Fish & Chip shop, Chinese and Indian take aways.

The largest variety of shops and restaurants by far is in Horley town centre itself, about a 15 minute walk or a short bus ride on the number 100 bus.
