Make an informed choice from over 30 Heathrow hotels convenient for Terminals 2 or 3

Perhaps the first point that should be made for those looking for a Heathrow airport hotel using Terminals 2 or 3 is there is no hotel that you can walk to from either of these passenger terminals. You will need transport of some kind.

None of the mainstream Heathrow airport hotels at any passenger terminal are allowed to run complementary shuttles either, instead the airport authority runs buses called Hoppa Buses that serve several hotels on each route for a fee.

There are over 30 mainstream airport hotels around the airport perimeter catering for all budgets.

Heathrow Airport is a very large airport, it can take 15 minutes or more to drive from Terminal 2 to Terminal 4 for instance.

Terminals 2 and 3 are together in the centre of the airport between the runways. Terminal 5 is on the airport perimeter at the western edge of the airport. Terminal 4 on the perimeter on the southern edge of the airport.

Heathrow Airport hotel choices are dominated by the large global chains, many of which have several hotels each serving particular passenger terminals.

Many of the hotels have a passenger terminal in their name. This doesn't mean they are at that terminal. Hotels can be located a long way from the terminal mentioned in their name, it is just the name of the passenger terminal they are most convenient for.

Hotel transfers from terminals 2 & 3

As there are no complementary hotel van shuttles allowed, the airport authority runs their own hotel buses called Hoppa Buses. There are many Hotel Hoppa bus routes. Each route services 3 or 4 hotels that are close to one another on the edge of the airport at frequencies commonly between 15 and 30 minutes. There is a flat fee that is the same for every Heathrow hotel whatever the distance from the passenger terminals.

For the length of journey the fare is quite expensive and if you are using a budget hotel can form a significant proportion of the overall cost of your hotel stay.

The only practical alternative for a Heathrow hotel from Terminals 2 or 3 are public red London buses. For the closest hotels to Terminals 2 and 3 along the Bath Road you can use these free of charge. The London buses run 24x7 on many of the routes and frequencies are higher than the Hoppa Buses.

The big downside of the bus is that unlike the Hotel Hoppa buses that pick up directly outside the arrivals hall at Terminals 2 and 3, the London buses depart from the Central Bus Station, a 5/10 minute walk from both terminal 2 and terminal 3, though underground moving walkways are shielded from the weather.

The buses are also just normal public buses with minimal room for luggage storage, a problem if you are travelling heavy.

Beware of hidden charges beyond hotel room price

What to look for so your total outlay ends within budget

A lot of people make their purchasing decision based purely on the headline price of the room. This can be a big mistake at Heathrow where add-ons you can avoid can easily be far more than the room price - especially at the weekends when hotels offer attractive headline deals when the free spending business people are away.

- Check the room price includes sales tax (currently 20% in the UK)

- Factor in the cost of getting to and from the hotel. If your hotel is not on the Bath Road the Hoppa Bus that becomes almost mandatory can be a significant cost. From a Bath Road hotel you have the option of a free public bus

- Eating and drinking at the airport hotels can be eye watering in terms of prices. A meal for two can turn out to be more than the cost of your room that night. If your hotel is not on the Bath Road your hotel may well be isolated and as a result no escape from hotel prices.

- If you want to use the Internet check whether it is free or not. A lot of hotels still charge steeply for wi-fi to protect their pay TV/Movie revenues.

Want to go sightseeing in Central London?

The London Underground that offers a reasonable cost transport option between Heathrow and London takes the best part of an hour to get into Central London.

Pay out the premium prices of the fast Heathrow Express train and the London terminus at Paddington is probably far from where you want to go in Central London.

From most Heathrow hotels you'll need to add on 20-30 minutes to get to the position where you are actually boarding the train from from your hotel.

There are hotels at Terminals 4 and 5, the Hilton Terminal 4 and the Sofitel Terminal 5 that have direct access to the train stations at these terminals. However these hotels are normally the most expensive on the airport.

If you are arriving at Terminals 2 and 3 you can use the Heathrow Express train free of charge on the 5 minute journey to Terminals 4 or 5. Frequencies are every 15 minutes.

Hilton Garden Inn Hotel Heathrow Airport

Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow

For more reasonably priced hotels the Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow is a good choice, being less than 5 minutes walk from Hatton Cross Underground.

The Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow is orientated towards passengers using terminals 4 or 5, the Hoppa Bus from Terminals 2 and 3 is not frequent and with black out periods where it doesn't run at all.

You can get the Underground one stop from Terminals 2 and 3 to Hatton Cross then walk or the 285 bus will take you free from the Central Bus Station to Hatton Cross Underground.

The St Giles Hotel at Feltham is another hotel convenient for getting into London, located next to Feltham Station with very frequent commuter trains, much faster than the Underground.

It is a little way from the airport and the only scheduled transport is the 285 bus that runs 24x7 about every 10 minutes from the Central Bus Station at Heathrow. The St Giles is normally one of the cheaper hotels at Heathrow.

Overnight in Paddington, Central London

Heathrow Express from Paddington gets you to check in Faster than many airport hotels

The Heathrow Express Train takes just 15 minutes between Heathrow Central Station and Paddington in Central London. This is about the same time that hotel shuttle buses take to get to most airport hotels.

The Heathrow Express is also at least as frequent as the hotel shuttles, more frequent than most.

If seeing a little of London is important to you then why not stay overnight at a hotel around Paddington Station instead of at Heathrow.
