About Dover Castle

View of Dover Castle with blue sky

Dover, situated at the closest point between England and France, has historically been an ideal location for fortification against potential foreign invasions.

Dover Castle is strategically positioned atop the renowned White Cliffs of Dover, providing a commanding view of the town and port below.

History

Long before the Normans began constructing castles in England, the location was initially an Iron Age hill fort. It later became home to a Roman lighthouse and, subsequently, an Anglo-Saxon church, which was part of a fortified Saxon settlement.

After the Norman invasion in 1066, William the Conqueror raised the first Dover Castle using earth and timber. The castle was garrisoned uninterruptedly until 1958, a continuous nine-century span equalled only by the Tower of London and Windsor Castle.

Dover Castles secret tunnels

The tunnels under Dover Castle were first excavated during the Napoleonic Wars (1797-1810) to serve as barracks and storage for soldiers. They were later expanded and repurposed during the Second World War.
