Where
To Find The Best Value Hotels in London |
If you
want something more than a Bed and Breakfast, there is normally a
bargain to be had somewhere in the mainstream hotels.
Some hotel districts where leisure visitors are predominant like Bayswater,
Paddington and Kensington have the highest discounts during midweek.
Other districts like The City, Bloomsbury and Euston where the businessmen
dominate are cheapest at the weekend. Spend some time researching
here and you'll soon find a bargain. |
A
Guide To Where To Stay In London
Here we give an honest brief appraisal of the various hotel districts
in Central London so you can quickly identify likely suspects appropriate
for your needs.
No matter where you stay in Central London you are never far from
an Underground Station or frequent bus service. You can save yourself
a lot of money by staying a couple of Underground stops from the very
centre. |
 |
| The
hotel districts of London all have their own character, some are cheaper
at the weekend, some midweek. Some are aimed at the budget market,
others are looking for high rollers. |
Accommodation
Districts
|
| |
Bayswater
On
the northern edge of Hyde Park and crammed full of budget accommodation
with services and restaurants geared to this sector. The main street,
(Queensway) is one of the best places in terms of variety and value
to eat in London. The area has a good 'buzz' and its pleasant and
safe to walk around. As the district is geared to leisure travellers,
rates are more highly discounted during midweek than at weekends.
Only 15 minutes walk from Oxford Street. Hyde Park, Kensington Palace
and Portobello Road market on your doorstep. Plenty of night buses
when Underground closes. Two underground stations on Queensway itself.
A benchmark budget hotel in Bayswater is the Blakemore
Hotel.
In short, if you're on a budget can find a hotel you like - a good
place to stay.

Paddington
The
area is dominated by Paddington Station, terminus for the Heathrow
Express link. Excellent transport links makes this a great base to
explore from and is very convenient if you've flown into Heathrow.
Immediate area around station is like many major city centre railway
stations. A few streets from the station the streets open up and especially
to the south in Lancaster Gate and Sussex Gardens are quite spacious.
Very competitive room rates, much cheaper than just 1km down the road
in the Oxford Street area and the West End. The Darlington
Hyde Park Hotel is a midrange independent hotel with one of the
best reputations in London.
In short, if you're flying into Heathrow, need a central place to
explore from and are watching your budget - a good place to stay.

|
Victoria
On
paper this area has everything. Some of the major sights like Buckingham
Palace, Big Ben and London Eye are very close and as a transport hub
both local and direct links to all the airports, it arguably has no
equal.
Behind the station is a vast area of cheap bed and breakfast format
hotels with variable quality. There is a limited supply of 3 and 4
star hotels which tend to have a price premium for being so central.
District itself is relatively bland.
The Luna
& Simone Hotel is one of the better, though not the cheapest
Bed & Breakfasts in London. The Rubens
Hotel is one of the better 4 star hotels.
In short, if you're flying budget airline into Gatwick, Stansted or
Luton get a budget bus link into Victoria from the airport and a budget
Victoria hotel behind the station for the complete budget break. Or
if you're flying into Gatwick, price check the Victoria hotels for
ultimate convenience.

Kensington
A
large district to the west of the central area stretching out towards
Heathrow. The further you go west the more downmarket you go. First
Knightsbridge for Harrod's and luxury everything, Gloucester Road
for mid-market chain hotels, Earls Court the original budget district
when Heathrow was the only airport.
Because of its diversity its hard to say any more in this short summary.
The Kensington
Premier Inn is perhaps a benchmark for value in the mid-market
sector in Kensington.
In short, if you're flying into Heathrow the convenience of Kensington
makes it a great benchmark against anything else.

|
Kings
Cross St Pancras & Euston
The
area is being transformed rapidly and now houses the London terminus
of the Eurostar trains to Paris. Opposite Kings Cross St Pancras Stations
is a cluster of Bed and Breakfast hotels with for the time being some
of the keenest rates and best feedback in the budget sector in London.
Just along the road at Euston is a good choice of mid-market accommodation.
The area is on the fringes of the central area, Kings Cross has no
less than 5 Underground lines serving it, Euston 4. The Montana
Excel at Kings Cross is well received and cheap.
In short, if you're looking for cheap accommodation in a central position
check out the Kings Cross Bed & Breakfast hotels around Argyle
Square.

The
West End
The
West End is at the very centre of what most visitors to London want
to see. As a result accommodation attracts a big price premium. There
are few budget hotels in this area, those that there are still carry
a hefty premium to similar hotels just a mile or so further out. The
vast majority of the hotels are very large chain hotels of a 3 or
4 star category.
If you're accommodated in this area it is possible to walk to most
of the main attractions.
In short, if you're on an expense account, want the best or just want
to impress someone this is perhaps the area for you. |

Other
Central Districts
The
area known as the City of London occupies a whole swathe of land to
the east of the central area. This is the business and financial area
of London. Many visitors will visit St Paul's Cathedral or the Tower
of London but few stay here. What options there are tend to be expensive,
though at the weekends when the business men are away more reasonable
rates do appear.
On the other (south) side of the river is Southwark. Again visitors
may visit attractions along the shore of the river like the Tate Modern
but few stay, nor are there many hotels. Again those that there are
are influenced pricewise by the proximity of the City of London.
To the north-west of the centre around Marylebone, Regents Park and
Swiss Cottage hotels of course do exist. These are spread across a
wide area and are hard to typify.

| Travel
Lodge Style in Central London |
 |
|
In
most of the United Kingdom outside London, Travel Lodge style chains
like Travelodge and Premier Inn set a benchmark for value in
the budget hotel sector.
In central London they are not so competitive, but they do have the
reassurance of a brand name with a consistent quality level that is
most acceptable to nearly all visitors.
Ibis offer
similar accommodation and prices at their Euston, City and Earls Court
hotels. |
All
the major global hotel brands have a presence in Central London. Marriott
and Hilton are especially good for families.
Holiday Inn and Thistle Hotels are numerous and prices very volatile
with very attractive offers at off peak times. |
| Apartments,
Family & Single Accommodation ... |
|
Family
accommodation can be a problem, especially if the family is more than
four. Apartments offer a good solution. Citadines aparthotels have
apartments and studios and have many sites in places visitors want
to stay - they are a good benchmark. Many of the apartments are found
in the Kensington and Bayswater area.
Family rooms in hotels are most abundant in the Bed and Breakfast
hotels, but we also locate rooms especially in the large chains and
travel lodges. |

|
Using
London's Public Transport System... |
|
London
is very easy to get around using its comprehensive public transport
system.
The London Underground is the mainstay for most visitors and there
is always an underground station near where you want to go. The famous
double decker London red buses are legendary.
There is also very affordable and user friendly transport passes. |

|
London
Airport Hotels |
|
London
has the busiest international airports in the world, around 35% of
passengers at Heathrow are in transit.
One reason why London airport hotels are so in demand, over 40 just
at Heathrow.
There are particular good deals for domestic travellers offering parking
and hotel packages. |
| Airport
Parking at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton. |
|
 |
Car
Parking at London's airports can be very expensive. The good news
is that there is always competition so we compare what's on offer
at each airport.
There is always a choice between on and off airport car parking and
of course the ultimate in luxury - meet and greet services at the
passenger terminals themselves.
We also cover in detail hotel and parking packages, often cheaper
than just long term airport parking on its own! |
