Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, boasts one of the world's greatest - and oldest - universities, as well as some of the finest architecture in Europe. The colleges themselves, which make up the university, are amongst the architectural highlights, their ivy-clad stone walls protecting beautiful chapels, halls and libraries.

We enjoy a unique tour of Christchurch which journeys through the heart of this ancient building before we head to the college's spectacular dining hall, chosen as a key location in the Harry Potter films.

2 Day Downton Abbey Tour

Our tour allows us to access parts of the hall usually out of bounds to the public. We will also linger by the open fire as your guide reveals anecdotes about the movie and the remarkable links of Christchurch with the Alice in Wonderland stories.

After the tour of Christchurch, there is time to wander through the ancient streets of Oxford with your tour guide. Why not try out a pub lunch at one of the many famous inn's of Oxford.

After lunch we head for Highclere Castle made famous by the Downton Abbey TV series.

Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)

Visit Highclere and discover an inspiring Castle set amidst Lawns and Gardens of tranquillity and beauty.

It has been home to the Carnarvon Family since 1679 and the present Earl and Countess still live here. A soaring building of architectural confidence, it was designed by the pre-eminent Victorian architect Sir Charles Barry, and is filled with stunning paintings, tapestries and furniture.

Long-standing friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote Downton Abbey. He often commented he wanted a house which spectacularly testified to the confidence and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period.

Downton Abbey follows the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, whose lives were changed forever during the First World War. The series has been a worldwide success.

Visitors follow a route through the Castle though rooms with guides in each State room happy to share anecdotes and information. Visitors can then go up the Red Stairs to view some of the Bedrooms and the Gallery before walking down the Oak staircase to the Saloon in the heart of the Castle.

As well as the castle, the extensive grounds are rewarding to explore.

Tour Completion

Departing Highclere Castle we head back to London and arrive back at approximately 6.30pm.

Morning Hotel Pick Ups

Like all day tours, time is the enemy and all tours leave early in the morning.

London is a spread out place and one bus would take all morning to go around each hotel individually. Instead separate coaches each cover their own part of London and take you to Victoria Coach Station where you switch to the your tour bus for the day.

The link below lists all the pick-up hotels and current times they visit. If your hotel is not on the list and its in the centre of London then its almost certain there will be another pick-up hotel very close by.

If you are still unclear where the best pick-up point is or you are coming from outside the centre we have a blog where on this linked page you can discuss one to one the best solution for you.
