Crawley is a large town with about 100,000 inhabitants just to the south of Gatwick Airport. Although there has long been a town at Crawley it has enjoyed very rapid expansion in the last 50 years, most of the area covered with modern housing and business estates.

Crawley is a regional shopping centre with a significant town centre shopping area. Crawley Leisure park is anchored by a large multiplex cinema pictured right and a bowling alley complex and has all the chain restaurants you would expect like TGI Fridays, Pizza Hut, Franky & Benny's, McDonalds where teenagers are significant.

Most hotels in and around Crawley are large chain hotels off all grades. Although Gatwick airport custom is very significant for all hotels, the town of Crawley itself and its industries generate a large footfall of customers.

Gatwick Airport is only 2 or 3 miles north of the centre of Crawley. All of the hotels here except the Holiday Inn Express and Premier Inn Manor House have their own airport shuttles. These two that don't, have frequent local buses that pass the door of each hotel on their way to Gatwick.

There are also very frequent trains from Crawley and 3 Bridges stations to Gatwick. These same trains go onto Central London in well under an hour.

Crawley Hotels

The cluster of hotels to the north of Crawley (2 Premier Inn's and the Ibis) are in a light industrial area on the outskirts of Crawley. The Premier Inn South though is a delight with plenty of grounds, olde worlde pub and duck pond. There are very frequent local buses into the centre of Crawley (and Gatwick Airport) from here.

The other 'remote' hotel is the Ramada Gatwick, but here again there are many local bus routes to get you into the centre of town in a few minutes.

Crawley Restaurants, Fast Food and Pubs

In Crawley town centre there are just too many restaurant options to cover here. In terms of fast food there is just about every type of fast food you can think off including all the global chains. Like many other English towns, sit-down restaurants are dominated by Chinese, Indian and italian restaurants. English food tends to be concentrated in the pubs.

On the outskirts close to the Crowne Plaza is a very good value carvery pub restaurant with an all you can eat buffet that is of good quality for the low prices offered. Next to the Holiday inn Express is another pub chain, Harvester - a family restaurant offering steaks, chicken, pasta staples again at very good prices.

Crawley Leisure Park is full of restaurants dominated by global chains that address the 'youth culture' market. McDonalds, Subway, TGI, Franky & Benny, Pizza Hut, Bella Italia, Chiquito among others.

Crawley Leisure Park is just north of the town centre and is anchored by the Hollywood Bowl bowling alley and Cineworld multiplex cinema. There is also a health club.

Otherwise its lots of chain restaurants and teen hang out. Its a relatively new development and is well maintained.

Local Buses & Trains At Crawley

Crawley has a very good local bus service that fans out from the bus station in the centre of Crawley opposite the train station and adjacent to the shopping area.

The local bus company is called Metrobus.

There are many bus routes covering the whole of Crawley that operate daily from early morning to late evening at good frequencies.

The number 100 bus is one that goes past both Premier inn's, Ibis and Ramada running 2 or 3 times an hour from about 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Going the other way it goes to both passenger terminals at Gatwick.

Of the two hotels that do not have their own shuttle, the Holiday Inn Express is served by route 20 to Gatwick and the Premier Inn Manor house is served by route 100.

Trains from Crawley station are very frequent, as many as five an hour for the 8 minute journey to Gatwick. The railway station at Gatwick is part of the South Terminal. There is a free shuttle train to the North Terminal from the South Terminal.

Nearly every train goes onto London in under an hour either to London Victoria or on the First Capital line with stops at London Bridge and St Pancras in Central London.
