Gatwick Hotel Accommodation is available at competitive prices in all sectors from Bed & Breakfast, through no frills, budget chain hotels to luxury 4 star hotels.
There are about ten relatively large chain hotels within 1km of the terminals, the rest either double up serving the local towns of Horley or Crawley or offer a 'quiet retreat in the English countryside'.
To make an informed hotel choice at Gatwick you should understand:
-
Gatwick room rates are highly seasonal. Gatwick is the main airport for the British flying away to the sun. Prices are higher in the summer than in the winter months. Many hotels also are cheaper at the weekend than during the week, especially outside the summer months and for the 3/4 star hotels that attract a lot of business/conference customers. As a general rule of thumb the cheaper the accommodation the more stable the prices.
-
There are only three hotels within walking distance of the passenger terminals. The Gatwick Hilton is linked to the South Terminal, the Sofitel Gatwick is linked to the North Terminal. The Premier Inn Gatwick Central is the only budget hotel within walking distance of the Gatwick terminals. The Premier Inn is about a 5 minute walk from the North Terminal, the route is luggage trolley friendly but not covered.
-
Nearly all Gatwick hotels have their own hotel terminal buses, but invariably these are not free. Hotels vary but are normally around £3 pre transfer per person. Many hotels have children's and family rates. Some of the small Bed & Breakfast hotels still offer complementary shuttles.
-
Gatwick Airport has flights coming and going on a 24 x 7 basis. A lot of the hotels do not offer transfer services through the night and are highly variable when these services shut down and start up again .
-
Nearly all mainstream hotels rates are room only. Often there are packages which include breakfast or dinner. These can be good value as invariably hotel food and drink is expensive. There is a good range of budget places at Gatwick itself including McDonald's and Wetherspoon's for breakfast.
-
When costing out your accommodation, do try and factor in all costs including transfers and food. Sometimes rates are offered as loss leaders at the more expensive hotels and you spend more on transfers and food and drink than the hotel room.
-
Luggage trolleys also are not complementary at Gatwick, passengers will need a £1, €1 or US 25-cent coin, which is refunded when the trolley is returned.
