On Airport Gatwick Hotels
A Practical Guide To Staying In Hotels Within Gatwick Airport That You Can Walk To
![]() |
Staying at a hotel at Gatwick Airport itself, of course has the major attraction of being able to walk to your airport hotel from the passenger terminals without hanging around for a hotel shuttle.
At the moment there are six accommodation options at Gatwick Airport where it is feasible with luggage to walk to your hotel room, although two of them its a fairly long walk of about 10 minutes with luggage.
The original on-airport hotels are the Sofitel Gatwick and Hilton Gatwick hotels attached by covered walkway to the North and South Terminals at Gatwick respectively.
These are both full service luxury 4 star hotels, normally the most expensive accommodations available in and around Gatwick Airport.
Opened late in 2012, Premier Inn North Terminal is situated next to the Sofitel at the North Terminal and you can walk across the road into the terminal. The Premier Inn North Terminal is the only no frills budget hotel that you can walk to from either airport terminal at Gatwick within a few seconds.
The Yotel Gatwick is a Japanese cabin style option that is actually within the South Terminal itself. Not so much a hotel room as a bed in a small private space with restricted access times, but if all you need is a bed and little else it could be your solution.
The Marriott Courtyard is a signposted 10 minute walk from the south passenger terminal, but in all honesty most people seem to take the hotel shuttle bus (not complementary). Similarly the Premier Inn Airport Way is about the same distance but from the North Terminal.

Gatwick Airport Inter Terminal Shuttle Train |
All of the hotels at Gatwick Airport require you to go through customs and baggage checks. If you are just connecting flights you will still need full passport documentation to stay at the hotels, the same as if you were visiting the UK.
A free shuttle train (pictured right) runs every couple of minutes between North and South Terminal and is free of charge.
As stated above, for the Hilton Gatwick and Sofitel Gatwick hotels you walk straight into reception from within the South and North Terminals themselves.
The Premier Inn North Terminal Gatwick is located next to the Sofitel, facing the North Terminal and the Yotel is within the South Terminal beneath the arrivals hall.
The Marriott Courtyard is a straight forward walk and signposted from the South Terminal on a wide pavement, though there is no protection from the elements. The Premier Inn Airport Way is similar but from the North Terminal.
Restaurants, Fast Food and Pubs
The main hotels all of course offer their own restaurants and bars. As you would expect these come with a price premium attached. In both Gatwick terminals there is also a good choice of chain restaurants from fast food to something more substantial without going through customs. There is also branches of M&S Simply Food mini-supermarket good for sandwiches and snacks.
If you want to escape the bland, globalised fully priced offerings at the airport then head to the nearby towns of Horley and Crawley. We have full details of both Horley and Crawley on dedicated pages.
Trains run to the heart of both Crawley and Horley many times an hour from very early until very late from Gatwick's train station within the South Terminal. There are also frequent local buses.
Local Buses & Trains At Gatwick
Gatwick has a very good local bus service, especially to the local towns of Crawley and Horsham.
The local bus company is called Metrobus.
The train station at Gatwick is within the South Terminal at Gatwick. There are no reserved seats on the trains and a ticket is not tied to any particular schedule. Just buy tickets at the large ticket office in the passenger terminal. There are trains every 10-15 minutes to and from Crawley and trains to Horley are only slightly less frequent.
If you want to go to Central London on a day trip there is a choice of three different lines/train companies. Its not really practical to use Gatwick as a base for visiting London day after day but for a single day trip perhaps between flights its perfectly straight forward.
Trains take between 30 and 50 minutes.
