What to expect for those contemplating staying in Earls Court Kensington

Earls Court Underground Station
Earls Court Underground Station

Earls Court is primarily a budget accommodation district at the western end of Kensington. Much of the accommodation is small independent hotels, some of dubious quality. Having said that there are some very good, more upmarket options sprinkled through the district.

Hotels like the Marriott Kensington, Premier Inn Kensington and Base 2 Stay offer some of the best value in London without sacrificing quality in their respective sectors.

The district is as safe as any in London and is suitable for people looking for value and is particularly convenient for those flying into Heathrow Airport.

Kensington Earls Court Area

If you look at our Kensington hotel map, you will see Earls Court is at the western end of Kensington. The heart of Earls Court is the Earls Court Road around Earls Court Underground, this is the nucleus of where all the shops and restaurants are.

Typical Earls Court Street

The Earls Court Road is a one way street, the other way is the Warwick Road which runs parallel, north - south through the district. Earls Court Underground is sandwiched between the two. The Earls Court Road is the western perimeter of London's congestion zone and as a result is often at gridlock with vehicles avoiding paying the London congestion charge.

This doesn't really matter as the London Underground should be the preferred mode of transport for getting around for visitors.

Opposite the Warwick Road entrance to Earls Court Underground Station is Earls Court Exhibition Centre which hosts some of the major exhibitions in London. Years ago it was also a major rock concert venue but nowadays these are found at more modern venues.

Chelsea Football Club is within 10 minutes walk of Earls Court Underground Station and another premiership club, Fulham not too much further.

There are no tier 1 London sights within walking distance of Earls Court. An off beat quirky place to visit though is Brompton Cemetery at the south end of Earls Court by West Brompton Underground Station.

Shopping,Restaurants, ATM's, WiFi, Convenience Stores ...

There are no department stores or worthwhile dedicated shops along the Cromwell Road, for these go to Kensington High Street or Knightsbridge. What you do have is a lot of places supporting the more fundamental needs of the visitor.

Tesco Supermarket Earls Court

Within sight of the front entrance of Earls Court Underground on Earls Court Road you will see most of the global fast food chains, including McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks and independent bakeries and such like. For the budget traveler all the basics are here with launderettes, pubs and small supermarkets available.

Some of the pubs do very good value breakfasts as well as traditional pub grub in the evening.

At the northern end of Earls Court on the Cromwell Road is a large Tesco supermarket open 24 hours.

As well as food (including a salad bar) all the basics you might need like toiletries, non prescription medicines and similar basic needs are available at benchmark low prices.

There is a nice roomy Costa Coffee outlet on the first floor too. There are very few hotel districts in London where you will get a full size supermarket like this on your doorstep.

For sandwiches and snacks, the M&S Simply Food branch just south of the Underground Station has many fans. Apart from the pubs offering traditional fayre, there are a lot of independent small restaurants offering cuisine's from around the world at prices that won't break the bank.
