Room rates in Central London fluctuate wildly, by day and district. As the mainstay of most 4 star hotels in London are business people on expense accounts the lowest rates are found in most luxury hotels at the weekend and holidays.

It should be emphasised the stars system doesn't tell you how good or comfortable a hotel is, it relates only to the services offered within a hotel on a yes/no basis.

In the very centre of London around the West End district, most of the well known brands of hotels have many sites and in terms of numbers dominate.

Of four star hotels, the Thistle chain often have the most competitive rates. The majority of Thistle Hotels are very large, old hotels requiring a lot of TLC and of the main chains the Thistle probably gets the most mixed reviews. Room rates at Thistle Hotels are especially volatile.

Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza Hotels both owned by Intercontinental offer solid accommodation. A wide range of room tariffs including a 14 day APEX rate can provide very good value. Most North American visitors are pleasantly surprised by Holiday Inn compared with their experiences back home with the chain.
Marriott has probably the nearest accommodation to what North Americans are used too. Marriott are particularly good for family accommodation.
Hilton and Radisson offer what most people would consider mainstream 4 star hotels in the very centre of London. Nearly all of Radisson Hotels are in the West End district.

In terms of location, any part of the West End, Bloomsbury or Victoria is very close to the sights, many of which will be within walking distance of your hotel.
There is a cluster of 4 star hotels over by Tower Bridge, on the fringes of the City of London. This area has been redeveloped in a very tasteful way and is very attractive for the visitor. Wherever you stay in the centre, the London Underground will be close and get you where you want to be fast.

There are also a good choice of 4 star hotels near Kings Cross/ Euston, Victoria and Paddington stations. If you are flying into Heathrow, there is a lot of 4 star hotels in Kensington around the Gloucester Road/South Kensington area. The Underground runs every 5 minutes to Heathrow from here.
