There is a choice of public transport options from Gatwick to the English Midlands including the main towns of Oxford, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby & Northampton.

National Express coaches run services to most major towns and cities in the Midlands. The National Express coach network covers nearly every town and city in England and Wales, so chances are there is a connecting bus if there is no direct service.

By rail its a complicated process normally with an awkward connection in Central London involving a cross London journey between rail stations. There are alternatives on some journeys that by-pass London.

Rail Gatwick - Midland Towns
From Gatwick to the Midlands, routes are complex. In many journeys there will be a choice of routes.
The big obstacle is London itself which sits between Gatwick and the Midlands. The main line from London that serves the Midlands is from Euston Station, other services run from Kings Cross/St Pancras and Marylebone. The main terminus from Gatwick is Victoria, thus requiring an awkward transit across town by Underground or taxi.

A popular alternative is a feeder service that runs once or twice an hour from Gatwick to Reading where there are frequent one-stop connections to Oxford and Birmingham especially. There are occasional trains by Virgin Cross Country direct from Gatwick but these are irregular in timing.
Railways are privatised in the United Kingdom. You may use several companies travelling from Gatwick to the Midlands as there are no direct trains.
Prices are very complex, normally the best fares are advance purchase, if you pay on the day it can be very expensive.

Use the 'trainline' link right - for timetables and available fares.
For overseas visitors the big problem with train tickets is that there are no true etickets at the moment, so you miss the reasonable advance purchase fares. Tickets ordered online can only be sent to UK postal addresses.
There is an option where you can order online and pickup the tickets on arrival at a special ticket machine. The good news is that Gatwick is one of the few stations where such a machine is located.
