There are direct flights from Gatwick operated to Manchester and Newcastle, otherwise rail and coach services are the predominant public transport avenues to the north of England.

National Express coaches run direct services to most major towns and cities in Northern England. From Gatwick there are direct services to Sheffield and Leeds, otherwise most destinations are indirect connecting with London Victoria coach services.

By rail its a complicated process normally with an awkward connection in Central London involving a cross London journey between rail stations. There are alternatives on some journeys that by-pass London.

Rail Gatwick - Northern Towns
Most journeys to the north of England require an interchange in Central London.
The North West England is serviced from London's Euston station, North East England from Kings Cross.
For Euston the easiest journey is to catch a Gatwick train to Victoria, then get the Underground to Euston. For Kings Cross, First Capital Connect operate a service direct to Kings Cross Thameslink from Gatwick, but this station is a short walk from the main line station of the same name.

A slower option for many destinations that overcomes the need for the London transfer is to catch a feeder train that runs once or twice an hour from Gatwick to Reading. From here, Virgin Cross Country runs frequent services to the North of England.
Railways are privatised in the United Kingdom. You may use several companies travelling from Gatwick as there are no direct trains.
Prices are very complex, normally the best fares are advance purchase, if you pay on the day it can be very expensive.
