Tate Modern Official Web Site Globe Theatre

Opened in May 2000, the Tate Modern is the UK's premier museum of Modern Art. The museum is imaginatively housed in an old electric power station right in centre of London on the waterfront.

Tate Modern displays the Tate collection of international modern art from 1900 to the present day, including major works by Dalí, Picasso, Matisse, Rothko and Warhol as well as contemporary work by artists such as Dorothy Cross, Gilbert & George and Susan Hiller.

A sister gallery, Tate Britain is the most prestigious gallery in Britain for works from the 15th century to the present day and complements the Tate Modern.

There is also a full range of special exhibitions and a broad public programme of events throughout the year.

The seven-storey museum is segregated into four themes : Still Life, Landscape, the Nude and History. There are guided tours and also handheld audio tours.
The museum can get very busy at peak periods with perhaps a lot of visitors who wouldn't be there if it wasn't free bemused by the exhibits.

The Globe Theatre is right next door to the Tate Modern.
From the Tate Modern you can take a pleasant walk along the river westwards to Westminster, you will pass many of London's landmarks in a traffic free environment.

Alternatively walking eastwards your riverside path is full of interest all the way to Tower Bridge, a highly recommended walk through an atmospheric part of London.
Admission Charges
Free - Donations encouraged.
Some special exhibitions may have an entrance fee.

Opening Times
10:00 to 18:00 Sunday to Thursdays.
10:00 to 22:00 Fridays and Saturdays.

Getting There
The site is not the easiest to access.
The nicest approach is to cross the river from the opposite bank using the Millennium Footbridge. The Millennium Footbridge is not far from Mansion House Underground on the Circle and District lines and St-Paul's Cathedral has its own Underground on the Central Line.

What To Do Around The Tate Modern:

The Globe Theatre is right next door to the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. On the other side of the river reached by the Millennium Footbridge is St Paul's Cathedral.
From the Tate Modern you can take a pleasant walk along the river walking eastwards. Your riverside path is full of interest all the way to Tower Bridge, a highly recommended walk through an atmospheric part of London.
We have made available a free self guided walk, (outline map below) that includes the walk to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge from the Globe Theatre.
