There
is a choice of direct public transport options from Heathrow to the
English Midlands including the main towns of Oxford, Birmingham, Coventry,
Leicester, Nottingham, Derby & Northampton.
The broad choice for the traveller is between cheaper, less frequent
coaches, more prone to delays through traffic or the usually much
more expensive train option.
National Express coaches run direct services to most major towns and
cities in the Midlands.
By rail its a complicated process with either a coach to Reading or
Watford to pick up the train, or an excursion into Central London

Heathrow - Midland Towns |
There
is no major mainline station at Heathrow. Two separate Rail Air coach
services operate from Heathrow, one to Reading, the other to Watford.
From Reading there are train services to Oxford, Banbury and Birmingham
and beyond. From Watford, Virgin Trains operate services up through
Milton Keynes, Coventry and Birmingham continuing as far north as
Scotland.
The railway to Leicester, Nottingham and Derby requires a journey
from Heathrow to London St Pancras. The Underground at Heathrow makes
this connection direct, but it can be crowded. |
Railways
are privatised in the United Kingdom. You will use several companies
travelling from Heathrow to the Midlands as there are no direct trains.
Prices are very complex, normally the best fares are advance purchase,
if you pay on the day it can be very expensive.
Use the 'trainline' link right - for timetables and available fares. |
 |
For
overseas visitors the big problem with train tickets is that there
are no true etickets at the moment, so you miss the reasonable advance
purchase fares. Tickets ordered online can only be sent to UK postal
addresses.
There is an option where you can order online and pickup the tickets
on arrival at a special ticket machine. The big problem here is that
there is no such machine at Heathrow, the nearest machine being in
Central London at Paddington or Reading. |
