Salisbury is a bit of a rail hub with main lines and frequent trains going east to London, south to Southampton and west to Bath and Bristol.


Salisbury's main role for visitors is as a gateway town to Stonehenge about 10 miles north. There is now a Stonehenge Tour Bus that picks up from Salisbury Station and goes to Stonehenge and Old Sarum in a loop before returning to Salisbury itself.

The train station is 5/10 minutes walk from the Cathedral and Salisbury city centre where the shops and market are. Unfortunately there is no left luggage facilities at Salisbury Station.


Frequent trains run from London's Waterloo station taking approximately 80 minutes to do the journey.

There are normally two trains an hour operating up until very late evening.

On the Salisbury - Waterloo route there is also a chance you may be able to get deep discounted fares on Megatrain / Megabus.

Salisbury also has quite a good regional public bus network going to town such as Bournemouth, Blandford Forum and Southampton.

Stonehenge / Old Sarum Tour Bus From Salisbury

The Stonehenge Tour Bus

The Stonehenge Tour Bus is the only regular public transport to Stonehenge itself. It normally runs at least hourly and more frequently in the summer months.


The Stonehenge Tour Bus also allows you to stop over at Old Sarum,which is worthwhile.

The journey itself is quite scenic.


The Stonehenge Bus starts from Salisbury Rail Station and also picks up at the Bus Station.

Stonehenge By Public Bus From Salisbury

Not so long ago before the Stonehenge Tour Bus was introduced you used to be able get cheap public buses to Stonehenge. Today the nearest you can get to Stonehenge by public bus is Amesbury. From Amesbury its a 20/30 minute walk up to Stonehenge.

Take the number 5 or 6 bus from Salisbury Bus Station to Amesbury, a 25 minute ride. Buses run approximately every 30 minutes Monday to Saturdays, every 2-3 hours Sunday.
