- Oxford - The "City of Dreaming Spires"

 

Days of Operation & Duration:

Runs almost every day of the week through April and October.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between November and March.

Tour leaves London around 9.15 a.m. from Greenline Coach Terminal, Victoria, Stop 9, returning to London the next day around 7 p.m.

 

Tour Itinerary:

2 days to take in the highlights of the charming Cotswolds with its beautiful villages, the ancient stone circle of Avebury, village of Bampton as featured in TV’s Downton Abbey and the grandeur of Bath and Oxford.

Stay 1 night in the historic Roman town of Cirencester. (On some dates accommodation may be in other locations e.g., Bath or Cheltenham.)

 

Accommodation

Note: accommodation is not included in this tour. This is in order that you can choose the type you would prefer, helping to sustain the communities you visit in the long term. You can choose from a local hostel, Bed and Breakfast or hotel, to fit your requirements.

 

When you book, you can ask to have local accommodation reserved for you, or you can choose to reserve your own accommodation in the overnight locations. Your driver will drop you off with your hosts; you’ll pay your accommodation hosts directly.

Day 1

Avebury

You will visit the largest stone circle in Europe - Avebury - one of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain.

Together the henge, outer circle and the inner circles form an impressive part of the archaeological landscape of southern Britain, and remain a site of spiritual importance to many people today.

 

Cherhill White Horse

Following on from Avebury, you will pass by the hillside where there lays, a figure of a huge white horse cut into the chalk by the “Mad Doctor” in the 18th century.

Next you will journey to the historic village of Lacock in the heart of rural Wiltshire, a medieval gem; largely unchanged since the 13th century. Whilst ordinary people live and work here, this special village is popular with tourists for its unique preserved architecture, thanks to its ownership by the National trust.

 

Bath

After lunch you will travel to Bath, with your own free time to explore Bath Abbey and Roman Baths. This World Heritage Site is a must-see for many tourists in the UK, there is so much to see and do in Bath, you will be spoilt for choice.

 

Cirencester

Accommodation is generally in Cirencester, a market town and capital of the Cotswolds. Cirencester is famous for its market square with its cathedral like Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, also offering many interesting buildings built through different ages.

Day 2

The Cotswolds

Bibury

Bibury was described as the 'The most beautiful village in England' by William Morris. Bibury is a place many people return to time and time again, for its tranquillity by the river, and old stone cottages and mills.

A beautiful and impressive market town in the Cotswolds. See the attractive Market Square, a bygone of the town's former importance for its annual wool fairs. You will also come across the ancient cross, and the town stocks, shaded between an old elm tree. Stow is an important shopping centre and has many fine antique shops, art galleries, and gifts shops.

 

Bampton

The pretty village of Bampton is now well known for its use as a location for the TV series Downton Abbey. There is a pretty church, as well as old Grammar School, both of which were used as sets for filming, as well as other buildings used as pubs and shops in the series.

Finally you will head to the City of Dreaming Spires, Oxford. Here you will have your own free time to explore here the University town, its colleges and University buildings and the magnificent architecture of the world renowned city.

 

Keen Harry Potter fans will be able to spot many locations when they visit Christ Church, with the grandeur of the Great Hall especially familiar to those who may have always wanted to visit Hogwarts.

 

As the evening draws in, you return to London.
