Tour itinerary

The Leeds Castle, Dover, Canterbury and Greenwich day tour is a very varied tour with a lot packed into a busy day.

First stop is Leeds Castle where we are allowed access before Leeds Castle is opened to the public with our own private tour! Leeds Castle, although not the biggest castle in England, is surely the prettiest with a fascinating history that stretches to modern times.

It is then onto Dover for a photo stop and the famous white cliffs to be admired.

From Dover it's a short trip to Canterbury, the centre of Christian worship since it began in England. We explore the famous Cathedral and get glimpses of the medieval centre of of the city. There is also free time here for lunch.

Last but not least we travel to Greenwich, famous for the meridian line but with a great naval and scientific heritage. We leave the touring coach for good here as after a short walking tour we take a river boat from Greenwich right into the heart of London taking around an hour.

On the boat you take in many historic sights along the river, even travelling under Tower Bridge. The tour ends at Westminster Pier, right next to the Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben.

Leeds Castle

A professional guide is aboard the luxury air-conditioned touring bus the entire day and will provide commentary and guiding throughout. Leeds Castle, the first stop on the tour is about 90 minutes journey south east of London. During that short time you would have heard about Leeds Castle its history and interesting snippets from your guide.

Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle opens to the public at 10.30am but we get in 30 minutes before and are taken on a private tour of the castle.

Leeds castle was described as the "loveliest castle in the world" by Lord Conway, an explorer in 1913. It has a history stretching back a thousand years, where the original stone castle was laid in the time of William the Conqueror's son, Henry I.

Leeds Castle was once a Royal residence for six of England's medieval queens, a palace of Henry VIII, and a retreat for the rich and powerful. The setting is simply idyllic.

The Norman castle was built on two small islands, in the middle of a lake, and is surrounded by a vast estate. Our day begins with a private viewing prior to the castle opening to the public. We will explore the chapel, galleries, courtyards and banqueting hall before taking time to enjoy the setting and wildlife, which includes wildfowl, black swans and the birds of the aviary.

Dover photo/lunch stop

After about 90 minutes at Leeds Castle we make a brief photo stop in Dover. You can view the famous white cliffs from here with the historic Dover Castle sat on top of them. On a clear day you can even make out the edge of France.

It is now early afternoon as we climb out of Dover on the short trip to Canterbury.

Pulteney Bridge Bath

Canterbury Cathedral

The ancient city of Canterbury has been the centre of Christian worship for almost 1,700 years. Its greatest treasure is the cathedral, infamous as the setting for the brutal murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170.

When Thomas excommunicated some bishops, Henry snapped "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Unfortunately for Beckett, four of Henry's knights interpreted this a little too literally, and rode to the Cathedral and sliced Beckett's head off.

Three days after his death, there began a series of miracles attached to his martyrdom. These are depicted in the miracle windows of the Trinity Chapel. He was canonised in 1173.

His tomb can be seen in St. Thomas’s in Trinity Chapel behind the high altar. Beckett's martyrdom lead to Canterbury Cathedral becoming the centre of one of the most important medieval pilgrimages in Europe, and inspiration for Geoffrey Chaucer's famous work, The Canterbury Tales.

You can see the stone stairway, worn down by centuries of pilgrims, often kneeling their way to to Trinity Chapel, where the shrine used to be before it was taken in the Reformation.

Also within the precincts and cloisters of this great cathedral lie the tombs of many Archbishops, Edward the Black Prince and King Henry IV.

Your ticket includes entrance to the Cathedral and also allows some free time to explore the atmospheric old town and find somewhere for lunch.

Greenwich & river cruise to Embankment Pier London

It is now late afternoon and another hour or so's drive to Greenwich where we should arrive around 5pm.

Packed with exquisite parks, gardens, and architecture, Greenwich has strong connections with the sea, science, sovereigns and time. We will have time to take a look at the Cutty Sark, the fastest sailing ship of its time.

As the early evening approaches we enjoy a river cruise back to the centre of London. We will pass by historic sights such as the Tower of London, Elizabeth Tower with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, before arriving at Westminster pier where our tour ends.

The estimated time of arrival back in London is 7pm Embankment pier is next to Embankment Underground and a very short walk to Big Ben and Westminster Abbey.
