Salisbury is the closest major town or city to Stonehenge, which lies about 10 miles north of Salisbury. Apart from acting as a gateway town for independent tourists wanting to go to Stonehenge, Salisbury is very rewarding in its own right.
Salisbury Cathedral is one of England's finest cathedrals and its biggest single attraction. The Close within which it stands is very impressive as well. The Cathedral is particularly popular with visitors from the USA with an original Magna Carta document proudly on display.
Salisbury as a tour destination from London doesn't offer the biggest choice, only one tour regularly visits Salisbury. It combines Salisbury with Windsor Castle and Stonehenge for an informative day of culture and learning. See below for more details and to book.
As the closest major town to Stonehenge, Salisbury is also the starting point for the most thorough tour of Stonehenge.
Apart from the transfers between Salisbury and the Stonehenge landscape, this tour is a walking tour exploring the neolithic monuments and landscape around Stonehenge culminating in a special access visit to Stonehenge outside public opening hours where you can walk among the stones.
