Windsor Castle: tours from London

Guided day tours from London fan out across much of England and beyond. Favourites for day tours out of London combine a selection of Windsor, Bath, Stonehenge, Shakespeare's Stratford, Warwick Castle, Oxford and the scenic Cotswolds region, but there are many more to choose from.

A typical day tour will leave London around 8 to 9am and return about 6am to 8pm.

From London, the most popular day tours cover 3 distinct regions: the west (including Bath and Stonehenge), the north west (Oxford, Stratford and the Cotswolds) and the south east (Canterbury, Dover and Leeds Castle, etc).

It is possible to go further afield on a day tour from London. Be continental for a day on a Paris day tour - the Eurostar reaches Paris from London in just 2 hours and 15 minutes.

For the more adventurous, non-guided options are also available. A simple package allows you to visit Edinburgh in a day from London including train tickets, Edinburgh Castle tickets and hop-on bus tickets.

See the enigmatic Stonehenge from London

To the west of London, the main attractions are Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath. These three combined offer a whistle-stop tour of the most popular visitor attractions in the area.

Stonehenge is commonly visited by all tours staying only about 45-60 minutes, all that is required.

Georgian Bath, a lot of people could spend a long weekend at. Most day tours only stay around two hours, commonly including entrance to the Roman Baths. But you get the time to absorb the atmosphere of the Georgian architecture, much the same as when Jane Austen lived here.

Windsor is a place many people will spend a long day. Tours again mostly focus on a tour of the castle taking around 90 minutes with a small amount of time in the Old Town. A drive through nearby Runnymede where the Magna Carta was signed is normal when visiting Windsor.

Other popular stops in the area include Salisbury, an interesting medieval town, where a visit to Salisbury Cathedral provides viewing of one of the original copies of the Magna Carta.

Avebury is a small village within a large henge, larger than Stonehenge about 30 minutes away. Unlike Stonehenge you can walk among and touch the stones here.

Lacock is a village about 30 minutes from Bath. Its main attraction is that although very much a normal village, all the buildings are are at least a couple of hundred years old. Many films have been shot here like Harry Potter and Jane Austen recreating the England a century or two ago.
